Prof. Chittaranjan Yajnik
Congratulations to Professor Chittaranjan Yajnik on receiving the prestigious David Barker Medal for his outstanding contribution to scientific research and leadership in understanding early human development in relation to chronic disease in later life. The medal, which is awarded once every two years, was presented at the recent International Society for Developmental Origins of Health and Disease World Congress.
Prof. Yajnik is director of the King Edward Memorial Hospital Diabetes Unit and Research Centre in Pune, India. His research has highlighted numerous risk factors for developing insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. These include the ‘thin-fat’ body type (with a low body mass index despite carrying high levels of fat at the centre of the body), which places Indian populations at high risk. Using a variety of methods, including in-depth studies of hard-to-reach communities in rural villages and urban slums, he has amassed a body of evidence linking the ‘thin-fat’ body type to the nutrition of mothers during pregnancy.
On receiving the award, which Prof. Yajnik described as “a very proud moment”, he told us: “I hope our research will help improve the health of coming generations by improving the health of young and adolescent girls.” He added that “We have been almost continuously funded by the [Wellcome] Trust since 1987, and this has had a tremendous impact on our achievements”.
